Learning to identify and name written numerals from 0 to 5

Recognizing Numerals 0-5

Read questions aloud. Show student the numeral (write it, use numeral cards, or point to it on screen).

Materials: Numeral cards 0-5, paper and marker, objects to count

How to use: Read "What number is this: [show numeral]?", student says the number name, enter their answer. Make it a game - find numerals around the room, match to dot cards, trace with fingers.


Numerals are the symbols we write for numbers. When we say "three," we can write the symbol 3. Learning to recognize numerals helps us read numbers on calendars, clocks, signs, and books.

Zero (0)

  • Means "nothing" or "none"
  • Looks like a circle or oval
  • "I have zero cookies" means no cookies

One (1)

  • A straight line
  • Means one thing
  • "I have 1 nose"

Two (2)

  • Has a curve and a line
  • Means two things
  • "I have 2 eyes"

Three (3)

  • Has two curves
  • Means three things
  • "A triangle has 3 sides"

Four (4)

  • Has straight lines
  • Means four things
  • "A dog has 4 legs"

Five (5)

  • Has a straight line and a curve
  • Means five things
  • "I have 5 fingers on each hand"

At Home
